About Caithness & Sutherland
Caithness & Sutherland encompasses a vast area of wild and sparsely populated land at the North of Scotland. The towns and villages in this region are few and spread over a large area so our Recommended Accommodation is dispersed around the communities of Thurso, Durness and Kylesku.
These regions have enjoyed an increased number of visitors due to the popularity of the NC 500 touring route. If visiting this area in the peak summer months it is wise to book your accommodation early.
There is a real sense of loneliness and isolation about this northern coastline. The impression of remoteness is amplified by the presence of deserted croft houses, for this is a region that suffered terribly during the Highland Clearances of the 18th & 19th centuries when crofters were forcibly evicted to make way for sheep farming.
The appeal of this area is the relaxed pace of life and the wide open spaces of wilderness. So allow time to stop for windswept walks on some of the great beaches along this rugged coastline.
