Orkney Accommodation

About Orkney

It takes a bit of effort to get to the Orkney Islands, but if you are interested in archaeology it is well worth the investment. The famous attractions of Orkney are, of course, the standing stones at Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar, the prehistoric village of Skara Brae and the burial site of Maeshowe with its latter additions of Viking graffiti. But there is much more to be discovered here and some of the most atmospheric sites are the ones that you probably haven’t heard of… yet.

Orkney isn’t just about old stones though. The island of Hoy has dramatic scenery with 300 metre high sea cliffs. Hoy is also where you find the Scapa Flow museum that tells the history of the Orkney Islands strategic role as a vast natural harbour during both World Wars. Reminders of the military past are evident all over the islands and deserted coastal batteries still stand silently on guard.

Despite being on the northern fringes of Scotland, the Orkney Islands do not feel like an outpost and the islanders have a strong sense of their own identity and distinct culture. There is something quite magical about this group of islands and they offer a truly unique experience.

PLEASE NOTE: That most island B&Bs will expect a minimum 2 night booking.

On the Orkney Islands, our current range of Recommended B&B options is limited due to the unexpected closure of several properties. We hope to rectify this soon, but our guide currently lists just 3 options:,

  • A luxury B&B and 3 modern guesthouses in the principal town of Kirkwall.
  • A B&B on a working farm near Stromness
  • A modern B&B, dog friendly in the quiet village of Orphir
  • A stunning modern house in a rural setting in the Deerness area

Young Children are accepted in 4 properties, and pets are accepted in 1.

In addition to the places that we recommend from personal visits, this guide lists 1 additional property that has been recommended to us by our friends.
