Glenfarclas is one of the few independently owned distilleries on Speyside and has been run by the Grant family since 1865. The distillery also boasts the largest stills of any of the Speyside distilleries.
Glenfarclas distillery sits in the middle of open farmland at the end of a short road that connects the distillery to the A95. It has to be said that Glenfarclas is not the prettiest of distilleries and it gives the impression of being mainly built in the 1950’s. The visitor centre is quite a modern building, with lots of tartan, but is a bit lacking in “soul”. That said, there is a lovely tasting room (The "Ship's Room") that has wood panelled walls and furniture taken from the 1910's cruiser the RMS Empress of Australia.
Where Glenfarclas scores points is the friendliness of its tour staff. Unlike some of the big name Speyside distilleries, which run tours like a production line, Glenfarclas is a more intimate set up where the tours are for small groups and the people that guide them are not rushing to keep to a schedule.
The distillery is about 5 miles / 8km south west of Aberlour and is easy to find from the A95 Grantown-on-Spey to Aberlour road.
