Mount Stuart was the residence of the family of the Marquis of Bute and is a relatively recent building, having been started in 1879 to replace the previous building, that burnt down in 1877. The original plans for this enormous building, with its distinctive gothic architecture, were only completed in the late 1980's.
The house is a lavish piece of self-indulgence by the 3rd Marquis, whose interests in astrology, mythology and religion are echoed throughout the design and décor of the building. You find yourself wondering if he might have been just a little bit eccentric.
The Marble Hall and Marble Staircase really do have the “WOW” factor and we suspect J.K.Rowling might have stolen some of her ideas for "Hogwarts" from a visit to Mount Stuart.
You get to see a lot for your money, and there is a very stylish visitor center & café. We strongly recommend you consider Mount Stuart as a day trip option from Glasgow or Ayr.
