The Strathspey Railway runs between Aviemore, Boat of Garten, and Broomhill in the Cairngorms. The attraction is run by a group of volunteer train enthusiasts, who have recreated a nostalgic experience of the 1950s with great attention to detail.
To get your tickets at Aviemore Station, you have to take the footbridge to Platform 3, where there is a booking office and a small shop.
The experience takes you back 50 years in time, with train guards in period dress, quaint old-fashioned wagons, and traditional restaurant carriages. If you get a first-class ticket, you will be served tea, coffee, and biscuits (check the Strathspey Railway Timetable for rates).
It’s a relatively short train journey, but the route does pass through lovely countryside, and it is an unusual treat to travel by steam train. The journey takes about 40 minutes to go from Aviemore to Broomhill.
If you don't have time for the whole experience, then we'd recommend the Boat of Garten to Broomhill section which takes you along the River Spey and through the lovely scenery of the Spey Valley.
There is also the option to take lunch or dinner on the train. See their website for details of the dinner trains and the menus available. Pre-booking is required for these meals.
