Talisker Distillery

Overview

Talisker Distillery is well known as one of the Classic Malts and for many years it was the only distillery on the Isle of Skye, but it is now joined by Torabhaig Distilley in the south of the island. There is also a distillery of Raasay, which is a small island accessible by car ferry from Skye. The name Talisker derives from a Norse word that means "sloping rock", but the distillery is actually in a village called Carbost and not in Talisker, which is a place that lies further west along the same road that the distillery stands on.

The road to Talisker is clearly signposted from the main A87 and A863 roads on Skye. To get to the distillery you drive all the way through the village of Carbost and the distillery is on your left. The distillery is one of the few all weather attractions on the island so it is worth taking note of the tour times in case you find all your other sightseeing optiions are washed out by the rain.

After visiting Talisker distillery you may want to stop at the Old Inn in Carbost to try some other malts and hear some live music on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights during summer. The Old Inn is also a reasonable place to stop for food and there is usually something of interest on their menu of “Today’s Specials”.

Whilst in Carbost to visit Talsiker Distillery, you might also like to take the nearby single track road to Glen Brittle, where you get some of the best views of The Cuillin mountains. Thios road also leads to the so called "Fairy Pools" which are a rather overcrowded tourist destination so this road gets very congested in the summer months. A quieter option, is to continue west from Carbost along the road to Talisker Bay where there is an unusual beach of grey / white sand surrounded by high cliffs. This beach was used for some of the scenes in the movie "Outlaw King", which tells the early story of King Robert the Bruce.
